Online marketing consultant or go it alone?

In this day and age where the economy is soft, the money is tight and staff has been reduced or they are working as hard as they can, most good business owners wonder if the expense of hiring an outside marketing consultant is a wise investment. Every company that wants to continue must market. It doesn’t matter if you are small and happy with where you are or you are looking to expand and grow. You will notice that micro-businesses (1 person companies or the self-employed) must market and Coke must market. That means everyone in-between must also market.  Even if you have traditionally relied on referrals sooner or later you will have a dry spell and if the marketing isn’t in place and actively being worked on it could cripple your company.

Contrary to what a lot of people are saying out there, online marketing doesn’t suit every business. Recently I was having a conversation with the owner of a small local restaurant. If they were to start using online marketing they would definately need the help of a consultant because no one on staff had the skills or the time to invest. However, with an average sale from a customer of $15.00 they would need to bring in thousands of new customers to break even. This was just a local place that people dropped into when they wanted to grab a hamburger. They were not expecting people to travel across the city to eat there.
