Tie marketing with giving

I was talking to a friend of mine the other day and he said in times like these (with the Haiti earthquake) he just has to turn off the t.v. and isolate himself because it is so hard to watch the news unfold. I know for myself, I have to become very aware that it doesn’t consume and then immobilize me.

The very best thing any of us can do is to try in some small way to help. When we tie the things we have to do anyway (we all know marketing is a necessity, right?) to things we care deeply about, then we are creating a  positive message and a greater way for our customers to get to know us. It’s a proven fact that people buy from people they feel they know, trust and can relate to. We are extremely lucky when we can do something to benefit ourselves (get new customers or remind the old ones about us) and at the same time do something that will benefit our neighbourhood or country or the world.

A few months back I attended The Thirty Day Challange where the hosts were obviously using this marketing to increase their customer base. Nothing wrong with this because they are known for giving great value whenever they speak. But they went beyond the normal and linked with Kiva so that participants could donate as a group and then could see the difference they were making to people’s lives. When it came time for them to sell their product they also pledged to give some of the proceeds to Kiva

In my post,  “How blessed are we?” I was asking for everyone to take a breath and do something now to help the people of Haiti. Now I’m asking if you can find a way to go beyond that, to work it into your every day marketing and keep the act of giving alive. Here’s the challenge. Spend an hour or two today (include your staff if you have some, or even make it a topic around the dinner table) and see what ideas you can come up with.

I have to caution you that in order for it to be successful it has to be sincere.

  1. People will smell a phony act of kindness a mile away so tie your giving and your marketing with something you really, truly, care about. Tell those you are marketing to why you care about this.
  2. Don’t just slap any old thing up on the internet to sell, add a charity to it and hope for the best. Always remain true to your products and services and give the best value possible.

This blog post will NOT make you millions in a week

Here are some of the subject lines of emails I have received in just the last few days:

  • I Went From Dead Broke To Making $50,000 Thousand Dollars A Week.
  • The Instant Income System
  • Just 38 hours left
  • Just 10 copies left
  • Closing the doors until who knows when
  • How to create traffic and money on demand
  • I made $2,300,000. in 36 hours
These emails were not from spammers but from people who are known in the online marketing business.

Each one offers a product for sale that will turn around your business as soon as you buy it. Many of them are offering this product for a limited time and if you do not buy now you may miss out forever. To make the offer even more enticing, they offer what they say are thousands of dollars worth of bonuses. I averaged out the price of these products and they hover around $3,000 a piece. Recently I was emailed one that was a whopping $10,000 and the guru tried to sell me by letting me know his disdain for the losers who weren’t smart enough to run out and buy his product.

The emails go on to tell me about the guy who was homeless and then started making millions, or the women who was on the verge of losing her home to foreclosure. Each case study has something in it that we can identify with. Our worse fears realized and then, their product to the rescue, their wildest dreams come true.

There are always people who want to “get rich quick” and will try any new scheme that comes along. My father was like that. Every few months he was into something new. This was before the Internet, so his schemes were buying products he was suppose to re-sell at farmers markets, local fairs etc. He started so many businesses we couldn’t keep track. What he ended up with was a garage full of unsold products. You can’t change these people, it’s in their blood. They will always be looking to the next new thing to make their millions.

But I’m talking to the rest of us. With so many people being laid off, worrying about being laid off, losing their homes or just struggling to get by – there are more and more people desperately looking for quick answers. The Internet brings us all those people who are claiming to have the answers. Look, they made millions and you can too! We wonder if we should just invest our life savings and get this guru to give us the answer to our prayers.

Maybe little Johnnie can go another month without new shoes so we can get this coaching by this expert who lives in a million dollar house. Listen, your not a loser or a bad business person because you can’t afford or don’t want to risk thousands of dollars to buy a product that claims to be the instant answer to success. In my books, that makes you a very smart business person.

I’m not saying that the fluke will never happen, I’m just saying I wouldn’t bet
the farm on it.

Here are some truths the guru’s won’t be talking about.

Truth 1:
Running a business is hard work. There is absolutely no business system on the face of the earth that I have encountered that will bring you 1.3 million dollars in 36 hours with no effort on your part. And that is what is wrong with what they are saying. Even if I believed that they made all that money in that little time, they are still not talking about the years they worked to get to that point. They aren’t talking about the fact that they now have staff that help them out with their product launches. Back when they were a little guy just starting out, they didn’t make those numbers, and neither will you.

Truth 2:
Marketing, like every other part of your business, is an ongoing process. It is not a one-shot deal, do it, your done, the money starts flowing in. Marketing requires you strategize, plan, implement and then repeat, repeat, repeat.

Truth 3:
Some of these gurus are telling you that if you pay them $5,000 they will teach you how to manipulate people to buy your stuff. Guess what! They are using the very same manipulation techniques to get you to buy their stuff. Look a little behind the curtain and you will see that they are using hyper-marketing, the use of exclusivity, the inflated prices to make you think there is urgency in buying. One of the techniques I found very annoying was those guys who put a timer on their websites and said the price was going up every hour. Come on. Was the value of the product going up every hour.. ummm no.

What is the real answer?
If you really want to own a business, make sure you want to own it because you love what you do, want to give out the very best value you can and are prepared to work hard at it and pay your dues. Otherwise, keep trying to find a job and work for someone else.

The truth is that as small business owners we have to work our tails off, gather around us the experts in fields we are not comfortable handling ourselves and build the strong business from a solid foundation. We have to offer excellent value in our products and our services, to the right customers who need what we are selling, and when we do, the business will bloom. The truth is that “do unto others as we would have them do to us” is about the best business and marketing advice anyone could ever give you. If you want to be treated honestly, buy something of great value and work with people with integrity, everyone will expect you to give the same.

There are no instant business answers. I wish there were. Along with world peace I wish I could give everyone guaranteed instant millions, especially those who are hurting so much right now.
